Women-only hockey clinic

ORONO – Icing. What’s that? Cross-checking. What’s that? What’s a 5-minute major? Have you ever asked these questions? Do you wish you knew what the referee’s call was for? Now is your chance to find out.

The Friends of Maine Hockey will hold a free, women-only clinic to help women better understand and enjoy the game of men’s college ice hockey. University of Maine coaches will explain the rules of the game, the strategy behind the plays, the referee’s signals and penalty calls.

The Women’s Only Hockey Clinic is 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Alfond Family Lounge, University of Maine. Refreshments will be served.

To reserve space, call Ellen Woolley at 732-5353 or Anne Britt at 667-5989. Walk-ins are welcome, but space is limited.

Soccer championship game

BANGOR – The Mid-Maine Junior High League championship soccer match took place Oct. 23 at the Down East Elementary School field.

The home team, Penobscot Christian School Eagles, 5-0 in the regular season, were matched up against the visiting Indian Island Warriors, 2-3 in the regular season, but 2-0 in the playoffs to get to the championship.

The teams were meeting for the third time this year.

Early in the first quarter, Josh Palmeter scored the first goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. PCS goalie Brandon Messer and the defense stopped many shots, but the Warriors broke through and tied the game before halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles continued excellent team play, and Tucker Rice rewarded them with a goal on an assist by Kayla Bousfield, and PCS took a 2-1 lead. Then, with just 90 seconds left to play in the game, Indian Island broke through again with a goal, and regulation ended with the Eagles and Warriors tied, 2-2.

After a few minutes’ rest and explanation of the rules, sudden death overtime began. The first overtime saw shots and saves, with plenty of excitement and nail biting for everyone. In the second overtime, the Eagles pushed the ball up the field with fantastic passing and teamwork.

On a quick centering pass from Tucker Rice, Zach Palmeter appeared from behind a defender and shot the ball past the Warriors’ goalie and into the net, giving the PCS Eagles the victory in the 2008 Mid-Maine Junior High League Soccer Championship game.
