ROCKLAND – A city man was hospitalized with a broken leg and dislocated shoulder after being hit by a car while crossing Maverick Street on Wednesday evening.
Stefan A. Blacart, 38, of Old County Road was walking across the street toward the Movie Gallery at 4:50 p.m. when he was struck by a 2001 Dodge sedan driven by Harriet L. Hyson, 66, of Jefferson. The car struck Blacart while he was in the westbound lane and flipped him onto its hood, smashing the passenger side of the windshield. He then was thrown to the roadway next to a telephone pole, according to Patrolman Joel Neal’s accident report.
Neal noted that Blacart was wearing black clothing and it was dark at the time of the accident, and the area where he was hit was not well-lighted. Although Blacart told Neal he believed he was hit while he was in the crosswalk, neither Hyson nor a witness believed that to be the case. Hyson told Neal she did not see Blacart until she hit him. Glass fragments on the ground were not in the crosswalk.
Blacart suffered a compound fracture to his left leg, a dislocated right shoulder, multiple abrasions and contusions to the left side of his torso and a cut to the forehead. He was taken by ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport for treatment. No charges were filed.
