BANGOR – TEC-Assist, a new nonprofit program affiliated with Husson University, held a celebration Thursday to celebrate its opening.

The program accepts donations of gently used mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, canes, bath and shower seats, walkers and more.

The equipment is then sanitized, restored to good working condition and sold for a fraction of the original cost.

“People can expect to save between 50 and 80 percent,” said director Colleen Adams. For example, she said, a refurbished shower bench that retails for $50 will sell at TEC-Assist for about $24. A folding walker with a $150 retail price will cost about $25.

The program has its headquarters in Bangor but also has a site in Portland. The goal is to build a statewide network for donating and purchasing quality used equipment, Adams said.

Donations and purchases can be made by appointment only. Motorized equipment such as hospital beds, scooters or power wheelchairs are not included in the program.
