WINDSOR – Two skunks have been confirmed to have rabies in central Maine, and animal control officers say other wild animals might have the disease.

Animal control officer Howard Morang said two dogs are now in quarantine after being attacked by skunks in Windsor in recent weeks.

Morang has been hearing complaints about other animals in the area, including reports of a raccoon with a face full of porcupine quills chasing animals and people. He says people should stay far away from wild animals acting strangely.

State Veterinarian Don Hoenig said Maine has had 49 confirmed rabies cases so far this year, fewer than what has been reported the past couple of years.
