Castleton State defeats Husson for NAC title

BANGOR – Second-seeded Castleton State College outscored top seed Husson University 5-3 in penalty kicks to win the North Atlantic Conference men’s soccer title Saturday 2-1 at Boucher Field.

Greg Klopfer scored off a T.J. Mazza assist 3:28 into the second half to give 13-8 Castleton State a 1-0 lead.

Josh Labonte scored an unassisted goal at 34:44 to tie it for 10-7 Husson.

Tournament MVP Mike Anthony of Castleton State saved seven of eight shots while Husson’s Miguel Dominguez turned away four of five shots.

Ryan Hahn, Corey Robbins, Mazza, Jason Potter and Klopfer converted their penalty kicks for Castleton State.

Castleton State advances to the NCAA III National Tournament for the fourth time in six years.

UM-Fort Kent 3, SUNY Canton 0

At Portland, top-seeded University of Maine at Fort Kent scored three second-half goals to down No. 3 SUNY Canton and hand the Bengals the Sunrise Conference Championship Sunday.

The Bengals downed No. 4 University of Maine at Machias 6-0 in the semifinals on Saturday while SUNY Canton beat No. 2 UM-Presque Isle 4-0.

In the championship game, Dwayne Smith, Walford Stewart and Andre Anderson scored goals for 20-0 UM-Fort Kent. Keith Williams II assisted on Smith’s goal. Giovanni Sinclair turned away three of nine shots.

Eamon Case saved 11 of 31 shots for the 10-8-2 Roos.
