Leonardi of York wins title Durgin 2nd in girls 5K race at New Englands

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Kennebunk’s Abbey Leonardi won the girls portion of the 74th New England High School Interscholastic Cross Country Championship Saturday.

Leonardi ran the 5K course with a time of 18 minutes, 12.7 seconds, beating fellow Mainer Emily Durgin of Bonny Eagle of Standish by 2.6 seconds.

Mark Feigen of East Greenwich, R.I., won the boys race with a time of 15:47.1. Brunswick’s Will Geoghegan, who finished 24th with a time of 16:13.3, was the top-finishing Maine runner.

Heidi Caldwell of Hanover, N.H., was third behind Leonardi and Durgin for the girls with a time of 18:29.9. Moria Kenny of Immaculate, Conn., finished fourth and Kristen Malloy of Glastonbury, Conn., was fifth.

Abby Mace of Maranacook of Readfield finished sixth with a time of 18:43.2, and Cheverus of Portland’s Fiona Hendry was ninth in 18:49.4. Adele Espy had a time of 19:01.0, good enough for 16th place.

Andrew Springer of Westerly, R.I., finished second among the boys with a time of 15:48.3. He was followed by Nick Ross of East Greenwich, R.I., Michael Levene of Joel Barlow, Conn., and Eric Malnati of Fall Mountain, N.H.

Hall-Dale of Hallowell’s Wade Davis was 25th, Maine’s second fastest boy, with a time of 16:14.3. James LePage of Greely of Cumberland Center placed 26th followed by Cape Elizabeth’s Matthew Rand (27th), and Alex Moser of York (28th).

Glastonbury, Conn., claimed the girls team title with 80 points followed by Hanover, N.H., at 150. Cape Elizabeth was sixth with 214 points. Scarborough finished 21st followed by Freeport (22nd), Greely (25th), Waynflete of Portland (29th) and York (30th).

Danbury, Conn., scored 129 points, eight better than Amity, Conn., to win the boys championship. Greely was the top-finishing Maine school, placing 12th with 370 points. Cape Elizabeth was 14th with Scarborough 18th, Cheverus 23rd, Lewiston 26th and Monmouth Academy 30th.
