LINCOLN – Heidi Stevens had to choose between renovating and building anew, and her choice will soon leave the town with a new Subway sandwich shop and 2,000 square feet of much-needed office space, town officials said Friday.

“It would be a good space for a retail outlet or an office of some kind,” Stevens said Friday of the open half of the building. “Right now I just want to see the right tenant come in there before we finish it completely.”

Stevens said she plans to raze the present Subway shop, which is an addition onto an old house, to create parking for the new $500,000 building. Both are on the same lot at 61 West Broadway, opposite a Hannaford Supermarket and McDonald’s.

The opening is expected to happen in mid-December, she said. The rest of the building will be finished a few months later.

The office space is much needed, town Economic Development Director Ruth Birtz said.

“Right [now] we have a lot of inquiries as to available office rental space and we have no vacant properties,” Birtz said. “I would think, then, that any commercial space expansion would be welcome.”

In other town business news:

. The Hannaford Supermarket on West Broadway celebrated a grand opening of its remodeling on Nov. 1 that allowed the company to increase its product quantities, including a natural and organic foods section, an olive bar and drive-through pharmacy.

. Movie America, a video store specializing in the sale of refurbished movies, video games and music CDs, opened Saturday at 42 Main St., the site of the former Maine Cooking Woods LLC and Nel’s Mattresses & More storefront.

Formerly of the Bangor Mall, Movie America has tens of thousands of movies, about 800 video games in a variety of formats and 25,000 music CDs for sale. The company also will seek permits from the Town Council tonight that will allow it to have live entertainment.

. The council also will vote on whether to issue the appropriate licenses to James and Linda Arnold, who are the new owners of Gillmor’s Family Restaurant, 236 West Broadway.

Charles and Cathy Gillmor sold the restaurant to the Arnolds for an undisclosed price last month.
