HAMPDEN – Morgan Woodhouse had a feeling the Waynflete girls soccer team would need three goals to win Saturday morning’s Class C state championship.

The Flyers of Portland got three, including one from junior forward Woodhouse, in the first half alone.

After that, Waynflete cruised to a 4-1 win over Orono and its first Class C state crown since moving up from Class D in 2005.

“It’s always nice when it’s your first time doing something, and this is our first time in states [in Class C],” said junior midfielder Sasha Timpson, who had a goal and two assists. “It’s a great feeling.”

It was the sixth straight Class C win by a Western Maine team since 2003. North Yarmouth Academy, the five-time defending state champion, lost to the Flyers (14-3) last week in the WM final.

Woodhouse’s score with 23 minutes, 22 seconds left in the first half proved to be the game- winner. She had the ball in front of the goal at the near post, drawing the defense to her, and slipped a shot past the Red Riots into the empty side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Mariam Qazi scored Waynflete’s first goal when she tapped in a loose ball. Mariah Monks made it 3-0 when she scored off a pass from Timpson.

“We knew we had to come out strong,” said Woodhouse, who assisted on Timpson’s goal in the second half. “We knew if we put three goals in right away, then we would be focused and ready to go.”

Orono’s 26-year coach Cid Dyjak, making his first state game appearance, adjusted his defense in the second half and the teams played much more even at times. The Flyers still outshot the Riots 8-3 in the half.

“It was hard to overcome [the three-goal deficit],” Dyjak said. “Basically we tried to deny a little more space, and Waynflete was good at overlapping, so that was kind of hard. You’ve got to give them credit. They’re a great team.”

Alex Crocker gave Orono some life when she scored on a free kick from about 20 yards out less than six minutes into the second half. The kick was set up when Waynflete goalie Julia Pope was whistled for stepping out of the penalty area on a punt. Crocker had another chance on the same call against Pope seven minutes later, but this time Crocker put the ball over the crossbar.

There were a few scary moments for Waynflete in the first half when Crocker and Julie Normand had breakaways, but Pope was able to stop both.

Orono goalie Elizabeth Fox made four saves on 14 shots. Pope stopped one of five shots.

Dyjak was pleased with the 11-3-4 Red Riots, who will lose just senior Normand from the starting lineup next year.

“I was proud of our kids,” said the coach. “They hadn’t been in this situation before and they were sort of growing up on the field as we speak.”
