The 43rd season of the Bangor Daily News Football Forecast is in the books.
For the last 10 weeks, the members of the BDN Sports staff have matched their knowledge of Maine high school and college football against each other and you, our loyal readers.
Assistant sports editor and college writer Pete Warner emerged as the staff champion for the second straight year while collecting his record eighth Forecast title. Warner ended with a 15-5 week to finish with a seven-game lead over Joe McLaughlin and three-time champ Ernie Clark.
Warner ended the season with a mark of 164-36, an .820 winning percentage.
After joining the staff in 1982, Warner previously claimed Forecast titles in 1984, ’89, ’91, ’94, ’97, ’98 and 2007.
Runners-up McLaughlin and Clark compiled records of 157-43 (.785), while Andrew Neff (155-45, .775) and Ryan McLaughlin (151-49, .755), rounded out the top five. The rest of the field included John Holyoke, Jim Goodness and Dave Barber (all at 150-50, .750), and Larry Mahoney (142-58, .710).
Everyone received a free “win” from Week 10 after the William & Mary-James Madison was inadvertently placed on the schedule a week early.
Week 10 guest Jay Long of Orrington held his own at 12-8.
That leaves Week 4 guest Steve Boyd of Hermon and Week 6 guest Mike Ellis of Calais as co-guest champions after each went 17-3.
The other guests were: Glenn Mower of Bangor, Jamerson Crowley of Brewer and Fred Stewart of Brewer (all 15-5), Larry Burke of Brewer and John Birmingham of Old Town (both 14-6), Paul Warner of Bangor (13-7) and Scott Cuddy of Hermon (11-9).
