Santa’s Helper fundraising effort starts today

Today, the Bangor Daily News officially kicks off its annual Santa’s Helper fundraising effort. The goal this year is to raise $50,000 by the end of December, all of which will go to The Salvation Army. Under the leadership of Capt. Josh Lyle, staff and volunteers are already busy identifying the needs of individuals and families throughout the region, and planning how they will meet those needs in time for Christmas. Here at the Bangor Daily News, we are pleased to lend our support again by giving people an opportunity to make a donation through the Santa’s Helper Fund.

The Salvation Army has started receiving applications for Christmas assistance. Applicants may apply from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 65 South Park St. in Bangor. People requesting assistance should bring proof of residence, the number of people in their household, documentation of food stamps, TANF, or income and expense information, children’s names, ages and birthdays. For more information, call 941-2990.

Last year, Santa’s Helper raised almost $47,000. It will be more important than ever to attain this year’s goal of $50,000, given the great need that confronts so many people throughout the region during these tough economic times.

Donations may be sent to Santa’s Helper Fund, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor 04402-1329 or may be made securely online at bangornews.com/santa.html. Donations received on or before Dec. 24 will be published in the daily Santa’s Helper column. Donors who prefer to remain anonymous will be listed as such, followed by donation amounts. All money received is specifically earmarked for The Salvation Army, and all gifts to the Santa’s Helper Fund are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.
