NEWPORT – Two people ended up hospitalized Friday night after a car struck a pedestrian during a driving rainstorm.

Kelley Harrington, 49, of Etna was driving west on Main Street, Route 2, in a 1996 Ford sedan, according to Lt. Randy Wing of the Newport Police Department, when Gerald Addington, 57, entered a crosswalk near the intersection of High and Main streets.

Wing said that Harrington was unable to see Addington, who was wearing dark clothing, because of the heavy rain. She struck him, and he was thrown into the windshield and landed in the roadway.

Addington was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for treatment of multiple broken bones.

Harrington’s passenger, Courtney McGinnis, 23, of Palmyra, also was taken to SVH. McGinnis is Harrington’s daughter and is eight months pregnant, Wing said. He said she was having contractions at the scene.

Both women were wearing seat belts and Wing said the accident remains under investigation.
