2 arrested in Bangor robbery

BANGOR – Two Orrington men were arrested Saturday after they reportedly forced their way inside a Bangor apartment, demanded money at gunpoint and assaulted three people.

Roger Cushman, 45, and Robert Taylor, 41, were taken to Penobscot County Jail, where they remained Sunday, held on $25,000 cash bail, according to a jail officer.

Each is expected to make an initial appearance today in Penobscot County Superior Court on charges of robbery, a Class A felony, and aggravated assault, a Class B crime, according to Bangor police. A Class A crime is punishable by up to 30 years in prison, and Class B up to 10 years in prison.

Officers were sent to an apartment on Thomas Hill Road shortly after 5 p.m. after one of the alleged victims notified police that someone was trying to break in, Bangor police Lt. Tim Reid said in a statement released Sunday.

Officer Tim Shaw was in the area of Thomas Hill Road, which runs between Union and Ohio streets, and responded quickly. According to Reid, Shaw heard yelling and threats outside the apartment and when he entered saw one of the men threatening a resident with a gun.

Cushman and Taylor complied with Shaw’s orders to surrender and put down any weapons, and, after other Bangor officers arrived, the two men were taken into custody without further incident. Reid indicated no shots were fired inside the residence but said three people suffered minor injuries from allegedly being struck by a gun.

It wasn’t clear why the Thomas Hill Road residence was targeted or whether Cushman or Taylor knew any of the alleged victims.

The case is still under investigation, Reid said, and anyone with information may contact the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384.
