MDI hospital auxiliary holds holiday fundraiser

Members of Mount Desert Island Hospital Auxiliary will hold their Christmas fair, luncheon and boutique Thursday, Nov. 20, through Saturday, Nov. 22, at two sites, reports Kate Joseph of MDIH in Bar Harbor.

The Boutique, which features new and nearly new clothing and accessories, is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, and Friday, Nov. 21, and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 22, at the former Window Panes Bed and Bath, 228 Main St., Bar Harbor.

Anyone who wants to donate clothing may leave it at the home of Eva Davis, 9 Mountain Ave., Bar Harbor, or call her at 288-5704 for more information.

The Auxiliary’s Christmas fair and luncheon is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Holy Redeemer Parish House on Ledgelawn Avenue, Bar Harbor.

The fair offerings will include a raffle table, handicrafts, baked goods, fudge, homemade pies and sandwiches.

Nelson Jewell of Cumulus Broadcasting has announced WBZN Z-107.3 will be collecting turkeys for the Manna food kitchen and area food cupboards starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in its “Free the Z” campaign to obtain 2,008 turkeys.

The campaign will be broadcast live from the parking lot of Hannaford’s in Brewer, where you are asked to donate a turkey or make a cash donation of $10 to cover the cost of a turkey.

The next Bone Health Information and Discussion will feature Joan Osler presenting a session on Reiki at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Bangor Y on Second Street, reports Robin Long for Caring Connections of the Bangor Y and Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Long explained Reiki “is a Japanese word loosely translated as ‘universal life energy,'” and that “Reiki is a very gentle, noninvasive touch therapy.”

The session is free, and anyone interested in Reiki is welcome to attend the event, which includes a calcium-rich snack and recipe.

Having met with success when the Hancock Woman’s Club held its first community potluck lunch in October, president Eunice Phillips invites everyone to attend the next potluck lunch at noon Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Community Center on Route 1 in Hancock.

Providing an opportunity for area residents to get together regularly, attendees are asked just to bring food for two to three people to share.

Paul Tormey reports the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra is holding a wine dinner fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the New Moon Restaurant, Park Street, Bangor.

Admission for this gourmet wine dinner is $65 per person, and proceeds will benefit programs of the BSYO, which is directed by Rebecca Edmonson, for young musicians in grades five through 12 who perform twice each year.

Tormey hopes you will enjoy this evening out and help the youth orchestra with its expenses.

Karen Cole e-mailed that the Brewer High School Music Association will hold a baked bean “suppah” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the BHS cafeteria.

The cost of the meal featuring three types of baked beans, ham, hot dogs, coleslaw, dinner rolls and a large selection of desserts is $5, free for children 3 and under.

Cole invites you to “come alone or bring the family!”

Kathy Marks-Molloy reports that Orono Public Library will hold an author talk and book signing for the recently published poetry collection, “The Art of Nesting,” by Sandra Hutchinson of Orono at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Inn at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community in Orono.

The award-winning writer is poetry editor for Puckerbrush Review and teaches at the University of Maine in Orono.

The public is invited to attend, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Penobscot Valley Senior College reports its members, and their invited guests, must register as soon as possible to attend a talk by Dr. Marcella Sorg titled “Drug Addiction – Theirs and Ours,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Campus Center at University College of Bangor.
