High winds and heavy rain caused power outages throughout eastern Maine Saturday night and Sunday morning and resulted in flooding in some Down East areas.
Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. reported as many as 6,600 customers without power early Sunday morning, most of them in Hancock County. Later in the morning, crews had restored power to all but 54 customers, according to Bangor Hydro reports, but high winds and rain continued through the morning and more outages occurred.
By 11 a.m., the company reported 1,047 customers without power. Most of those outages were in Washington County.
Central Maine Power Co. reported 550 outages, but said only some were related to Saturday night’s wind while others had more routine causes.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department reported scattered flooding throughout the county, particularly in the Machias and Addison areas.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported a number of boats breaking loose from their moorings in the Portsmouth, N.H., area, but no problems along the Maine coast.
The National Weather Service in Caribou on Sunday afternoon was forecasting partly cloudy skies for Monday with temperatures in the low 40s in the Bangor area and along the coast, and in the upper 30s in Aroostook County. Gale warnings along the coast were to be in effect until 1 a.m. Monday.
