Vote 1: Extending unemployment compensation: The Senate passed the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act (HR 6867) sponsored by Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., to extend unemployment benefits by seven weeks for workers with expired benefits, and by 13 weeks for workers in states with high unemployment rates. Supporters said the bill would provide aid for needy families while also helping stimulate a lagging economy. The vote, on Nov. 20, was 89 yeas to 6 nays.
