McLemore intends to join brother at UMaine next year

When University of Maine men’s basketball coach Ted Woodward signed guard Gerald McLemore last year, he knew he was getting a guard capable of stepping right into the rotation and making an instant impact.

While that has borne out, what Woodward didn’t know was that he was essentially getting two players for the price of one.

Younger brother Jacob McLemore, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard out of San Diego, will be joining big brother Gerald next season on the Black Bears roster after signing a letter of intent to attend UMaine.

“They’re different players. Jacob’s more of a ballhandler and less of a shooter,” said Woodward. “He’s a very quick, fluid player who can play multiple positions.”

According to a scouting report on the ESPNU web site prepared by Scouts, Inc., McLemore “could turn out to be one of the elite guards in the national (2009) class.

“Other than his long arms, what stands out the most in his game is his overall savy. He’s one of the few point guards in this era that resemble Steve Nash, rather than Allen Iverson. Although he’s very unselfish, he can stick the pull-up jumper with regularity.

McLemore, who is ranked 116th nationally among point guards, plans to be an international business major at UMaine.

“He’s really looking forward to the opportunity to play with his brother again,” Woodward said.

Gerald McLemore is currently the leading scorer for the Bears. The freshman guard is averaging 12.3 points per game after three games to help lead Maine to its first 3-0 start since the 1971-72 season.

Allman earns First Team honor

UMaine senior outside hitter Lindsay Allman has been named to the All-America East Volleyball First Team.

Allman, who played in 103 sets for the Black Bears this fall, helped lead the team to their first postseason appearance since 2005.

Allman’s 3.08 kills and 3.20 digs per set ranks her sixth in the conference, while she finished the season with 317 kills and 330 digs.

The Black Bears took on Albany in the America East semifinals in Albany, N.Y., Friday.
