PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A drawbridge that connects New Hampshire and Maine is open again after getting stuck twice in one day.
The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge over the Piscataqua River was shut down Thursday afternoon when an electrical malfunction caused the deck to get stuck in the open position. Crews had the bridge reopened 45 minutes later, but a similar problem caused it to get stuck again around 7 p.m., forcing it to close for more than an hour.
The bridge had just reopened on Tuesday after a significant upgrade that began last month. Officials said they’re not sure if Thursday’s problems were related to that work or to an incident earlier in the day involving a car striking one of the bridge gates on the Kittery, Maine, side.
