ROCKLAND – The National Weather Service on Monday afternoon issued flood watches for central, Down East and midcoast parts of Maine today and into Wednesday.
The NWS office in Gray issued a coastal flood advisory and a high wind watch for Knox County for this morning into late evening, Ray Sisk, Knox County Emergency Management Agency director, said Monday afternoon.
Sisk said 2 to 3 inches of rainfall were expected through today, with as much as 4 inches possible in some locations. Southeast winds were expected to increase to 30 to 40 mph with some gusts approaching 60 mph this afternoon and tonight. Downed tree limbs and scattered power outages, along with small stream and urban flooding, may be possible.
The NWS in Caribou also issued a flood watch for Down East and central sections of the state, saying windswept heavy rain amounting to 2 to 4 inches was expected today into Wednesday with the potential for flooding in low-lying areas and some tidal flooding in coastal areas.
The watch was in effect for central and southern Penobscot County, interior and coastal Hancock and Washington counties, and southern Piscataquis County.
A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts, according to the weather service.
In Aroostook County, light snow was expected starting late tonight, with snow and rain Wednesday and Wednesday night. Precipitation accumulations of a quarter- to a half-inch were expected during those periods.
