The roster of the ninth annual Maine All-State Volleyball Team is familiar territory for three members.
Hillary Cederna and Michaela Campbell from Greely of Cumberland Center and Mount Desert Island’s Alyson Yau are back on the first team for a second straight year. Joining them are Hannah Adelmann of MDI, Keila Grigware of Biddeford and Alyssa Yeung of Falmouth.
The six-time defending state champion Greely Rangers have placed at least two players on the All-Maine team each of the last five years. Last year, Cederna and Campbell were two of three Greely first-team picks.
Yau is back a second straight time as well after leading her Trojans to an Eastern Maine title and state runner-up status for a fourth consecutive season.
The second team consists of Lara Marshall and Nicole Osborne of Calais, Ariel Knights of Woodland, Taylor Davis of Washington Academy of East Machias, Scarborough’s Caitlin Cleary, Alyssa Grigware of Biddeford and Sara Burnheimer of Gorham.
The team is selected by the state’s high school volleyball coaches.
Honorable mention status went to Greely’s Linnea Zroika and Karlee Biskup, Falmouth’s Charlotte Rogers and Carolyn Smyth, Rachel Fogarty of Gorham and Scarborough’s Katrina Curneil.
First team
Adelmann, a senior outside hitter and a second-team all-state choice last year, elevated her game this season, leading the team with 112 kills. She also notched 40 aces and 57 digs and was a 92-percent passer.
Yau was the pre-eminent service specialist in the state as she helped MDI break a team school record for aces with a team-leading 72. The senior setter also totaled 20 kills, 20 digs and 166 assists.
Cederna and Campbell were classic bookend outside hitters. Cederna, a senior, led the Rangers with 54 aces on 124-for-143 (86.7 percent) serving and 126 kills. She also had 14 blocks and 85 digs. Campbell, a junior, finished the year with the same service percentage (124-for-143) en route to 15 aces, 92 kills, 84 digs and five blocks.
Yeung is a junior middle hitter who sported an 89 percent hitting percentage to go with an 84.7 percent kill percentage (188-for-222), 63 blocks, 25 sets and 32 digs.
A sophomore outside hitter, Grigware led the Tigers as a 95-percent server and 92-percent passer. She also had 170 kills (12.1 per match) while also averaging 4.0 blocks per match.
Second team
Marshall, a senior setter, and Osborne, a junior middle hitter, gave the Blue Devils a solid 1-2 punch as Calais made it all the way to the Eastern Maine final for the first time in program history.
Marshall was a 92.5 percent server, hitting on 258 of 279 and totaling 57 aces. She also had 186 assists, 81 digs, and 27 kills. Osborne served at 82.4 percent (216-for-262) with 95 aces. The two-time second-team pick also had 47 blocks, 81 digs and 165 kills.
Knights, a junior outside hitter, served at a whopping 92.6 percent (274-for-296) and notched a school-record 76 aces. She also had 107 kills, 133 digs, and 12 assists.
Davis led her team with 137 digs as a sophomore outside hitter. She also had 41 aces on 165-for-185 serving, 137 digs, 70 kills and 19 assists.
Cleary, an outside hitter for Scarborough, led her team with 81 kills and 40 aces. She was also called the team’s best back-row passer by her coach.
Grigware, Keila’s sister and a senior outside hitter, was a 90 percent passer and 86 percent server. She averaged six kills and three blocks per game for the Tigers.
Senior outside hitter Burnheimer was one of the Rams’ top servers and passers. She is also a two-time second-team selection.
The single-season record-holder for service aces on the Mount Desert Island volleyball team was listed incorrectly in a story about the Maine All-State Volleyball Team that appeared in Wednesday’s paper. It was senior Whitney Walls, who set the mark this season with 100 aces and ranked among the state’s best servers, while teammate and all-state pick Alyson Yau tallied 72 aces.
