AUGUSTA – Gov. John Baldacci is heralding the return of Free Fare Fridays, a promotion that encourages Mainers to explore mass transit options available across the state.
Starting on the day after Thanksgiving and continuing through the day after Christmas, passengers on local buses will be able to ride for free on Fridays.
The program has been tried twice in the past, and officials say it’s proven to be popular, with ridership increasing by up to 38 percent on the state’s largest bus services.
Baldacci said public transit is helping people cope during difficult economic times. He said Free Fare Fridays can make a difference for household budgets that are stretched and for people who may be struggling to meet transportation needs.
