Rumford papermaker to cut 250 temporarily

RUMFORD – NewPage paper company said it will lay off about 250 employees at its Rumford mill starting Dec. 8.

Market-driven layoffs are also affecting NewPage mills in other states. In Rumford, paperworkers union Local 900 President Gary Hemingway estimated that 250 to 270 workers will be affected by the layoffs, which will run through early January.

Hemingway said some of the other paper mills in Maine, including Verso and SAPPI, are also experiencing downtime.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud issued a statement Tuesday, saying he was “deeply concerned” about the company’s decision, and about the impact that this will have on the community.

“Our economy faces serious challenges. The affected workers are dedicated, talented and hard-working Mainers who give it their all,” Michaud said. “Mainers have rallied for each other during difficult times in the past and will do so now.”

Michaud said his office will provide assistance to help workers affected by the layoffs.
