UVM tops Maine in shootout

LEWISTON – Peggy Wakeham’s power play goal 7:13 into the third period, set up by Chelsea Rapin and Molly Morrison, capped a two-goal rally as the University of Vermont tied Maine 2-2 before winning a shootout in a Hockey East game in front of 263 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee Tuesday night.

Hockey East has implemented a shoot-out in its women’s league this season and Vermont won 3-2 as Teddy Fortin of Brunswick scored the winner.

Vermont picks up an extra point in the league standings but the game will go as a tie on the teams’ records.

Maine is now 3-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in Hockey East while Vermont is 3-9-1 and 0-4-1.

Vermont extended its unbeaten streak against Maine to four games (2-0-2).

Kyleigh Palmer and Wakeham had also scored in the shoot-out for the Catamounts while Maine’s Myriam Croussette and Jennie Gallo converted.

Taryn Peacock had staked the Bears to a 2-0 lead by scoring 2:45 apart early in the first period. Vanessa Vani and Amy Stech assisted on the first goal with Stech assisting on the second one.

Chelsea Furlani cut the lead in half with a second-period power play goal off a Wakeham assist.

Kristen Olychuck made 32 saves for Vermont while Genevieve Turgeon made 31 for Maine.
