NEWPORT – Regional School Unit 16, consisting of Newport, Corinna, Hartland, St. Albans, Palmyra, Plymouth, Etna and Dixmont, has announced that nomination papers will be available for any resident of that area who would like to serve on the RSU board of directors.
Nomination papers may be picked up at any of the town offices or at either of the superintendents’ offices on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Papers must be returned to the Superintendent’s Office of SAD 48 in Newport by Friday, Dec. 12.
Elections in all towns will be held by secret ballot on Jan. 28 at each town’s regular polling location. The new consolidation laws require this procedure to be followed for the election of the initial terms of the board. After this election, each town will elect its board members by its usual method.
The consolidation plan for RSU 19 requires that each town have a minimum of two board members and a maximum of four members, depending on population. Newport will have four members, Corinna will have three and the remaining towns will have two members each. Board members will also use weighted votes to conform with the one person one vote legal requirement. RSU 19 encompasses SAD 38 and SAD 48.
