PHILLIPS – The Maine Warden Service said a 40-year-old deer hunter from Phillips was taken to a Lewiston hospital after being shot in the thigh by his 19-year-old nephew.

Brian Mitchell told wardens that he mistook his uncle, Craig Mitchell, 40, for a deer as they were hunting in woods off Old Bray Hill Road in Phillips.

The shooting took place while a half-dozen family members were hunting on Thanksgiving morning.

Craig Mitchell made it out of the woods on his own. He was treated at Franklin Memorial Hospital before being taken to Central Maine Medical Center.

The incident remains under investigation. Wardens say a report will be forwarded to the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office for review.
