A 38-year-old Lee man was arrested after he reportedly shot off a gun while visiting a relative who lives in Springfield and then tried to run from police.
Neighbors of the relative on Old Winn Road called police after hearing the gunshot around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, said Maine State Police Trooper Barry Meserve. When law enforcement officers arrived, Hazen Shaw reportedly tried to drive away.
Shaw drove away, pursued by Meserve, until he reached a roadblock set up by the Maine Warden Service at the intersection with Town Line Road. Shaw drove into a ditch trying to evade the roadblock. As police surrounded Shaw’s vehicle, he allegedly continued to try to escape and in the process hit two vehicles blocking his car. Shaw eventually was captured by police about a half-hour after the incident initially was reported.
Meserve said police found a sawed-off shotgun in Shaw’s vehicle.
Shaw was charged with evading police and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and he also faces a federal firearms charge for possessing a sawed-off shotgun. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Sunday evening. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
Residents in Clifton, Eddington and Brewer may have witnessed a couple pushing their belongings down Route 9 in two carts over the weekend, and those living south of Brewer may see them along roadways in coming days.
The couple, who were identified by police as Christopher “Jim” James, 58, and Rebecca Yunk, 38, have no listed address, but reportedly came to Maine from Miami and entered the state in late October or early November heading to Calais.
They declined to comment on Sunday about where they were heading, but an Eddington woman said she was told they were heading back to Florida. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
