YARMOUTH, Nova Scotia – Fishermen threatened to stop trucks carrying lobsters from leaving southwestern Nova Scotia on Monday after dozens of boats returned to port to protest low lobster prices.
Jody Smith of Digby Neck said fishermen want to stop the trucks from leaving the province on Highways 101 and 103, and from the ferry terminal in Digby. Dozens of fishermen headed back to port Monday until they get a better price for their catch.
Fisherman Ashton Spinney said someone suggested the idea over a vessel’s radio. Spinney said fishermen are getting $3 a pound and that’s not enough.
Spinney, chairman of the management board for lobster fishing area 34, said lobster boats could be out of the water for two weeks.
