AUGUSTA – A basketball player who’s 10th on the University of Maine’s all-time scoring list has notched another win as a beauty pageant rookie.
Ashley Underwood has been crowned Miss Maine USA, outperforming a dozen other contestants at last week’s pageant in Portland.
The 23-year-old Underwood, who graduated from UMaine with a nursing degree, said she loves watching pageants and this was her first chance to compete in one. Pageant officials said they were impressed with Underwood’s command onstage.
The 5-foot-8 former UMaine guard scored more than 1,000 points for the Black Bears, and accomplished the same feat while playing at Cony High School in Augusta.
