Bates 79, Husson 64

At Newman Gym in Bangor, senior forward Val Beckwith scored 16 second-half points as Bates College of Lewiston pulled away for a nonconference victory over Husson University.

The Bobcats led 38-33 at halftime then embarked on a 19-9 run over the first 8:13 of the second half to establish a 17-point lead.

Husson would draw no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Beckwith connected on 8-of-13 free throws on the contest and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Bobcats.

Maggie DePoy was the only other Bates player in double digits with 14 points while former Lee Academy standout Amanda Gifford contributed nine.

Shelby Bradford, also of Lee, kept the Eagles within striking distance with 25 points and 14 rebounds, playing most of the second half with four fouls.

Bethany Sevey of Skowhegan had 14 for Husson and Bree Hanscom of Mattawamkeag added seven.

Bowdoin 68, Southern Maine 52

At Brunswick, Will Hanley scored 13 points to lead Bowdoin College past the University of Southern Maine of Gorham.

Randy Defeo added 12 points and five assists for the Polar Bears. Kyle Jackson had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Sean Bergeron paced the Huskies with 15 points and two steals. Andy Tracy scored 12 points and Otis Smith chipped in 10 points.
