BANGOR – An Eastern Maine Medical Center employee suffered minor injuries Wednesday crossing busy State Street when she was struck by a vehicle driven by another hospital worker.

After she was struck, Geraldine Bernard, 53, of Glenburn was taken to the hospital’s Emergency Department, where she received treatment for a cut on her head before being released, according to Bangor police Sgt. Jim Ken Buckley.

Bernard was crossing State Street about 5:20 p.m. to get from the hospital to the Wing Park parking area on the other side of the street when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Leland Whitting, 66, of Castine, who also works at EMMC, Buckley said.

When the accident occurred, Whitting was making a left turn from the Wing Park lot onto State Street, Buckley said.

Though Whitting had a green light at the time and Bernard had a walk signal, Whitting received a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Buckley said.

Bernard was taken back into the hospital by emergency medical personnel from Old Town, who were at the hospital on business and near the facility’s emergency entrance when the accident occurred, Buckley said.
