PITTSFIELD – A boil-water order has been issued for the town of Pittsfield because of a major water main break on Main Street.

Acting Water Superintendent Scott Noble said that a 10-inch main broke near the intersection of Crosby Street and water was bubbling up through the street and nearby sidewalk.

The leak was reported about 3 p.m. and within an hour construction equipment was opening the street and water employees were attempting to find the source of the break.

Repairs were going to take most of the night, Noble said. Meanwhile, Main Street traffic was detoured onto Library Street.

Noble said the boil-water order is only a precaution and all water used for consumption should be boiled for at least three minutes before use.
