BELFAST – One woman suffered a broken foot and another a cut hand when their cars collided head-on on Route 1 Tuesday afternoon.

Heather M. Pendleton, 39, of Belfast was taken to Waldo County General Hospital with a broken leg after the 4:31 p.m. wreck. The driver of the other car, Jane Parsons, 51, of Belfast, was treated for a cut hand.

According to Belfast police Sgt. Walter Corey, Pendleton was traveling north in a 2002 Oldsmobile sedan on the Route 3 overpass when she drove into the lane of the oncoming Parsons, who was driving a 1996 Toyota sedan.

When the two cars collided, the impact sent Parsons’ vehicle into a 180-degree spin before it came to rest on guardrails on the west side of the highway. Pendleton’s car continued north until it also came to rest against the guardrails.

Corey noted that Pendleton told him she did not know what happened and only remembered “seeing a bright light” before the crash.

The combination of wrecked vehicles and the pieces of emergency equipment that went to the accident scene caused traffic on the highway to slow to a crawl during the evening rush hour.

Both women were wearing seat belts. Each vehicle had an estimated $7,500 in damage and were towed from the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
