BANGOR – The annual wreath-laying ceremony on Kenduskeag Stream to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, on Kenduskeag Plaza behind Bank of America.
Col. Stephen Atkinson, commander of the Maine Air National Guard, will give the Pearl Harbor Day address followed by a floral salute and the Navy Hymn and a salute to the honored dead, taps and a benediction.
The annual ceremony pays homage to those killed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when the Japanese attacked U.S. naval ships and ground stations at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941.
The battleship U.S.S. Arizona was struck by an armor penetrating shell. The resulting fire ignited the main gun magazines and the explosion blew out all forward transverse bulkheads causing the ship to sink to the harbor bottom in minutes. The explosion and sinking resulted in the death of more than 1,177 crew members. Its remains are part of a national monument.
