MATINICUS ISLAND – Two fishermen were safe Sunday afternoon after their lobster boat, Tsallgood, sank in the waters off Matinicus Island.
According to reports from the U.S. Coast Guard, the fishing vessel suffered “catastrophic flooding,” and the two people on board were unable to save it. Fortunately, another vessel was in the area at the time, and its crew was able to get the two fishermen off the sinking boat safely. The rescued fishermen, whose names were not immediately available, were taken to Rockland.
The sunken vessel could pose a danger to other mariners. The Coast Guard broadcast regular warnings throughout the day Sunday, notifying mariners to avoid the area.
