BANGOR – An 85-year-old Milford man was taken to a Bangor hospital Monday after a head-on collision on Interstate 95.

At the time of the crash, Ralph Bond was traveling in the wrong direction. He also did not hold a valid state driver’s license, according to state police Trooper Forrest Simpson.

After receiving treatment for cuts to his face and hands at St. Joseph Hospital, Bond was issued a summons for driving his Chevrolet Lumina after his license had been suspended because of dementia and other health issues, Simpson said.

According to Simpson, state police were called to the northbound lanes of I-95 about 2:15 p.m. for a report of a vehicle heading in the wrong direction near the Stillwater Avenue exit.

Before police could get there, Bond struck a Nissan Sentra driven by Shannon Campbell, 25, of Eddington head-on. Campbell was traveling in the northbound passing lane at the time.

Simpson estimated Monday that Bond was traveling 40 to 50 mph and that Campbell was traveling about 60 mph when the two cars collided.

Given that, he said, it was a miracle that Bond did not suffer worse injuries, and that neither his wife, 83-year-old Rosalie Bond, nor Campbell, was injured at all. Both vehicles were demolished.

He attributed the lack of serious injury to the fact that all three of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts and that three air bags – two in Bond’s car and one in Campbell’s – deployed.
