Tax-cap alternative

Apparently I need to get out of my unsightly home more often.

In the op-ed, “Palesky tax cap would make Maine poorer” (BDN, Sept. 27), Lindy Davies wants me to believe that increasing the property taxes on undeveloped land while granting tax relief to buildings and improvements is a sane alternative to the Palesky tax cap.

Increasing the property tax burden of the landowners who demand the least from municipal services is not sane.

A more equitable alternative to the tax cap would be to assess undeveloped land based on “current use,” instead of “highest best use.”
