You have to applaud the work of Rich Kimball and those associated with Brewer Youth Theatre for coming up with unique productions to keep that program so alive and well.

“A Night of 1940s Radio” will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St.

“We’re going back in time 60 years to October 1944 to give the audience a taste of old-time radio,” Kimball wrote. “The centerpiece of the evening is a live radio play, the science-fiction story, ‘Zero Hour,’ by Ray Bradbury.”

The cast includes middle and high school students, staff members and guests.

Live music will be provided by a Brewer High School quartet led by BMS teacher Tom Leonard, and accordion music by Nancy LaMarre of Bangor.

Kimball will serve as master of ceremonies; Clayton Smith is the musical director; and students will be “presenting commercials from the 1940s,” Kimball added.

WABI-TV anchor Lanie Witt will be the newscaster, reporting to you what was happening 60 years ago.

Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors. They can be purchased at the door.

Sue Hamlett and Corrie Clark of Spruce Run in Bangor, the domestic violence project serving Penobscot County, remind us that October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

They also want us to know that information about domestic violence is on display throughout the month in participating public and school libraries in our area.

Spruce Run is marking the month with a library outreach project titled “Think About It.”

Displays include information about domestic abuse and healthy relationships through books, brochures, posters and free bookmarks.

Books about abuse and dating violence will be donated by Spruce Run to the permanent collections of participating libraries, and bookmarks with information about healthy relationship will be available for library patrons.

Some libraries also will host special children’s events called “Hands Are Not for Hurting.”

Two of those presentations are planned for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Bangor Public Library, and 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Orono Public Library.

Libraries participating in “Think About It” are located in Bangor, Bradford, Brewer, Carmel, Charleston, Corinna, Corinth, Dexter and East Millinocket.

Also participating are the libraries in Glenburn, Hampden, Lincoln, Millinocket, Newport, Old Town, Orono, Orrington, Patten and Stetson.

School libraries that are taking part are Brewer High School, Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln and Old Town High School.

Fund-raiser chairwoman Shirley Pagel hopes many people will attend the First Congregational Church of Lincoln annual Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at its location on School Street in that community.

She wrote that “Friday will be Bag Day,” and that you will find “lots of great bargains for everyone in the family.”

The event is sponsored by the Pilgrim Daughters of the Church.

Two trained volunteers are already working to get the “Thresholds” program up and running, but eight more volunteers are needed to complete its one-on-one mentoring component.

“Thresholds” is a five-step decision-making program for inmates within a few months of their release.

Funded by United Way of Mid-Maine, the program is run by HealthReach Retired & Senior Volunteer Program and will be conducted at the Somerset County Jail in Skowhegan.

Volunteer training is planned for Friday, Oct. 15, and Saturday, Oct. 16.
