ORONO – Marie-Andree Canuel provided a goal and an assist as the University of Maine scored four first-half goals on their way to a 5-0 women’s soccer victory over Hartford on Friday.
Laura Harper scored two goals to pace the Black Bears, who improved to a 9-4-1 overall, 3-2 in America East play. Heather Hathorn scored a goal and assisted on two others for the Bears. Erin Corey added a goal, while Allison Kelly and Natalie Berry provided assists.
Goalkeeper Tanya Adorno did not face a shot while tying UMaine’s career shutouts record with her 17th.
Liz Cook made eight saves on 14 shots for 2-8-3 Hartford.
Women’s hockey
Maine 2, Vermont 0
At Burlington, Vt., Tristan Desmet and Sonia Corriveau scored to back the shutout effort of goalie Rachel Gettings in the Black Bears’ season opener.
Gettings stopped all 21 shots she faced, including four on the power play.
Desmet scored unassisted with 3:10 remaining in the first period to give Gettings the only goal she needed.
Corriveau added an insurance goal 7:32 into the third period, also unassisted.
For the 1-3 Catamounts, Kami Cote made 25 saves on 27 shots.
Men’s soccer
Unity 3, CMCC 0
At Auburn, Matt Belonick scored two goals to lead Unity College to the win.
Dax Telepeiak scored on a John Korkus assist for the 8-4 Rams. Tyler Ferguson stopped three of five shots.
Matt Lethem made 15 saves on 22 shots for 6-5 Central Maine Community College.
