ROCKIN' OUT

Bucksport’s The Kave a haven for local bands

Take a drive down McDonald Road in Bucksport, go past the quiet residential areas until you reach the end. There, just before the road bends at the entrance to the Silver Lake Cemetery, you’ll find a sign with flowing spray-painted letters that reads: “Kave.”

Turn down the drive and you’ll find a normal, quaint-looking house that The Kave owner-operator Kathy Findlay shares with her family. A little square building covered with eye-catching graffiti murals, The Kave’s exterior is the kind of sight you might expect to find around burbs near Boston, or New York, but not in a place so rural and green.

And while it may seem like an odd, out-of-the-way spot, it’s a perfect location for a music venue that most weekends cranks out the sounds of punk, hard core and heavy metal.

After staging similar concerts at venues such as the Elks Club and the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bangor, Findlay decided to take her interest in the local music scene a step further. A little over two years ago, the longtime Bucksport resident bought property with the idea of opening a venue for punk and hard-core concerts where the bands and kids could feel welcome anytime.

The Kave was born.

“It really has become a place where people can come and hang out,” says Findlay. On any given day, she says, bands stop in to use the space for meetings and practice.

It’s a labor of love for Findlay, who, in addition to her Kave duties, divides her time between full-time work, family and finishing a master’s degree at the University of Maine.

“It’s a place where everybody can come,” she says. “It’s about community and being accepted. I do it for the bands, not the money.”

At the end of this month, The Kave will hold two chem-free, all-age, Halloween costume bashes. The lineup for the Oct. 30 show includes homegrown rockers Pushing Zero, The Arcolytes, Propel and others, while the Oct. 31 roster features local heavy metal acts Diecast, Inbound, Unscarred and others. Both shows start at 6 p.m.
