Bangor’s Jimmo stifles Hampden Pitcher allows only one hit to avenge earlier loss; Rams now 13-2

HAMPDEN – While Jen Jimmo had a monster pitching effort, the rest of the Bangor softball team stuck with plain old ground-ball singles for a 5-0 victory over Hampden Academy Tuesday at the Weatherbee school complex.

Jimmo fired a one-hitter and the Rams pounded out 10 singles, including four in a three-run fourth inning, as Bangor avenged a May 8 loss to the Broncos. The Rams are now 13-2 with a game against Brewer Thursday to end the regular season.

Hampden falls to 10-5 and will face Bucksport Thursday in its regular-season finale.

“We knew we could step up as a team and beat them today, and we came together as a team and won,” said Bangor’s Kerri Tuck, who hit three singles and scored two runs.

Jimmo sparkled, and Bangor’s defense made her look even better. The junior righty threw 72 pitches, 56 for strikes, struck out five and had no walks, allowed just one batter to get to a full count, and had a no-hitter through seven innings. The Broncos mustered just three baserunners.

“It was fastball, changeup, and a lot of drops,” Jimmo said of her pitching strategy.

Hampden’s Kristina Spaulding broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh. After Bangor’s Megan Huckins made a running catch in foul territory for the second out of the inning, Sara Lozito reached on an error to put runners at first and second.

But Jimmo struck out the next batter to end the game.

The Rams tagged 18 Broncos on either flyouts or putouts. Third baseman Tuck snagged two consecutive line drives in the fifth.

Although Jimmo and the defense were clicking and the Rams had a 1-0 lead, Bangor’s offense had stalled a bit through the middle innings. The Rams had a runner at third base in the first, second and third innings, but the Broncos were able to end the threats.

Not so in the fifth inning, when Bangor found the gaps that left the Hampden infielders diving.

The Rams started with a groundout, but Tuck and Jimmo hit consecutive singles, and Rachael Dube reached on an error to load the bases. Huckins drove in Tuck, Amanda Johnson plated Jimmo, and after a strikeout, Kara Holland hit a single to score Dube.

“Bangor hit really well today,” Hampden coach Rodney Wells said. “I give them all the credit. They’re a great team. … They hit the gaps and got the runs in when they needed to.”

Bangor added another run in the sixth when Ashley Tower singled, stole second, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a Jimmo single.

Tuck was responsible for the actual game-winning run. She hit a single off the first pitch of the game, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on an error.

“We know we have to chip away every inning and we have to come up with small hits,” Holland said. “Everything helps.”

Senior Jamie Wells picked up the loss despite six strikeouts, including one that ended the fifth with the bases loaded. Hampden recorded two inning-ending double plays in the game.
