Bangor police seek man in assault on churchgoer

BANGOR – Investigators are looking for a man who assaulted a woman on Sunday night as she walked along a path between Bangor City Hall and the Unitarian Universalist Church on Park Street.

Bangor police Detective Jeff Small said the woman fended off her attacker, even bit him on the cheek, after the man tried to grab her breasts. The man fled, although a skateboarder tried to give chase before the man disappeared.

Small said a police dog tracked a scent to Park Street where it’s suspected the man drove off in a motor vehicle.

The incident happened about 7:40 p.m. after the woman, a parishioner of the church, was leaving the building. The woman said that she had seen the man walking in and out of the church a short time before she left.

She said he wore a black and white bandana on his head at the church, but that he had pulled it over his face when he attacked her a few minutes later on the path.

The man is described as having a dark complexion and dark bushy hair and was wearing a plaid black and white shirt or jacket. He was clean-shaven and stood about 6 feet tall, according to the woman’s report.

Small said the woman had her cellular phone out when the attack occurred and that she fought back and screamed. She bit him on the cheek, although it wasn’t clear what kind of markings the bite left on his face.

A man with a skateboard heard the woman screaming and he saw the outline of the man grabbing the woman, Small said. The witness was on Center Street hill and ran around the bottom of the hill in hopes of finding the fleeing assailant.

The woman said Tuesday that her assailant ran along Park Street and likely passed the New Moon Cafe, so she’s hoping someone in the area saw something.

Small is asking for anyone with information to call him at 947-7382, ext. 255.
