Stop on warrants leads to assault charge

A Bangor man with three outstanding warrants added four more charges to his troubles Saturday night when he allegedly assaulted a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy in Hermon and fled.

Jeremiah Lovely, 19, was driving a 1997 Mazda sedan owned by a 17-year-old Hermon girl when Deputy Michael Adams saw him run through a stop sign onto Route 222.

Adams stopped Lovely and the passenger shortly before midnight. The deputy found out that Lovely had outstanding warrants out of Bangor for assault, among others.

When Adams was placing the young man under arrest, the deputy said Lovely struggled and eventually took off running up Route 222 toward Bangor. Adams said he injured his knee and pulled a muscle in his back during the altercation.

Adams used his radio to call another deputy who was in the area. Deputy Doug Smith found Lovely on Route 222 and drew his firearm, forcing Lovely to the ground.

Lovely finally was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Adams said he found a small bag of marijuana under the driver’s seat of the car.

Lovely will appear in U.S. District Court on Dec. 3 to face charges of operating after suspension, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and assault on an officer, a Class C felony.

Firefighters received a report Saturday afternoon of a fire at a mobile home in Carmel, but the structure was considered a total loss before officials could save it, Carmel Fire Chief Joey Pelletier said Sunday.

The home’s occupant, Rose Day, apparently had driven to Bangor early Saturday afternoon, Pelletier said. The chief said the fire started sometime after she left her Route 2 trailer, but he still wasn’t sure what caused the fire.

Pelletier said he plans to call the state Fire Marshal’s Office today but added, “I don’t know if they would find a cause either since it caused so much damage.”

The home was not insured.

A man was issued a ticket Saturday for operating a vehicle without insurance on Bangor Mall Boulevard, but he may face a bigger problem after he hit another vehicle and caused about $3,500 in damage.

Robert Abram, 22, of Bangor was driving a 1989 Chevrolet four-door sedan when he passed a 1993 Plymouth minivan on the left. The only problem was the minivan was turning left into the Staples parking area, according to a police report by Bangor Officer Michael Brennan.

Abram’s car struck the minivan, driven by Sheldon Strout, 34, of Hampden, causing about $3,000 in damage to his Chevrolet and $3,500 to the minivan, Brennan reported.

Abram left the accident briefly, but was tracked down by Brennan and issued a summons for operating without insurance. Abram also may have to pay for the damage to Strout’s car.
