Hampden, Morse, Schenck, Northport to host state soccer games

The Hampden Academy boys soccer team will travel to Bath to try to win their first Class A state championship Saturday, while Hampden will serve as host for the two state soccer games, the Maine Principals’ Association announced Monday.

Morse High in Bath will be the site of the Class A state soccer finals, while Hampden’s artificial turf field will be the site of the Class D games.

The Class B championships will be held at the MBNA Field at Point Lookout in Lincolnville, which is also an artificial surface. Schenck High in East Millinocket will host the Class C state championships.

Game times are 10 a.m. for all girls games and 1 p.m. for all boys games.

The MPA selected the state sites based on the results of last weekend’s regional championships. MPA officials try to find sites that are about an equal distance for the Eastern Maine and Western Maine teams to travel.

In the Class A matchups, Greely of Cumberland Center will send both its boys and girls teams to face their Eastern Maine counterparts.

The Ranger girls (11-2-4) will play Brunswick (16-0-1) while the Hampden boys (17-0-1) will also face the Greely boys (12-4-1).

The Class B matchups pit the Winslow girls (14-1-2) against Gorham (13-2-2). The perennial powerhouse Ellsworth boys (14-1-2) will square off against Yarmouth (14-2-1).

In Class C, the George Stevens of Blue Hill girls (9-5-3) will face North Yarmouth (16-0-1) in a rematch of the 2000 state final. The 10-6-2 Madawaska boys, who were the 10th seed in Eastern Maine, meet 14-3 Carrabec of North Anson.

Waynflete of Portland also sends both its boys and girls teams to state finals this year. The 11-2-1 Flyer girls will try to knock off 17-0 Lee in a rematch of last year’s state final won by the Pandas. The Waynflete boys (11-2-1) will try to avenge last year’s loss to Machias as they go up against 16-2 Van Buren.
