Shooting in Eliot sends man to hospital

ELIOT – Maine State Police detectives were investigating an early morning shooting Wednesday at a home on the Goodwin Road.

Mark Murphy, 39, was listed in serious condition after undergoing surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for a gunshot wound in the chest.

Police say Murphy was shot by David Oeser, 54. The two men live about a mile apart on Goodwin Road, and investigators said Murphy came knocking on Oeser’s door at about 1:30 a.m.

A confrontation ensued, according to Stephen McCausland of the state Department of Public Safety, and Oeser shot Murphy with a handgun.

Detectives have interviewed Oeser, whom they described as cooperative, and McCausland said no charges have been filed. He said investigators are still trying to sort out the circumstances of the shooting.

McCausland said Oeser “knows of” Murphy but the spokesman would not characterize the two as friends.

Hours before the shooting, Murphy found himself in trouble with the law.

Murphy was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault for allegedly attacking a man in a Kittery coffee shop, according to Kittery Police Chief Edward Strong.

“He just kind of flipped out,” said Strong, adding that Murphy was “throwing things around.” He had no weapon.

Murphy was released on bail after undergoing an evaluation at York Hospital, the chief said.
