Washington Academy, East Machias

EAST MACHIAS – Headmaster Judson McBrine has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2001. Baccalaureate will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 10, in the Gardner Gymnasium and graduation exercises will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, at the gymnasium.

Valedictorian Sarah Gamertsfelder is the daughter of Nicholas and Karla Gamertsfelder of Pembroke. She will attend the University of Maine, pursuing a degree in history. She has been a very active student at Washington Academy participating in the National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon, Student Council, and the Silver Quill, Washington Academy’s literary magazine. She is co-president of the Student Council and the co-editor of the Silver Quill. She attended the World Affairs Seminar in Whitewater, Wis., and the Maine Young Writers Symposium at the Haystack School of Arts and Crafts in Deer Isle. This year she was awarded the Maine Principal’s Award for her school. She enjoys writing, singing, and listening to oldies and classic rock.

Salutatorian Deana Pennell is the daughter of Perry and Naida Pennell of Northfield and Karen Pennell of Machias. Deana plans to major in mathematics and minor in music at Boston University. Deana is involved in National Honor Society, Concert and Jazz bands, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Silver Quill and drama. This year she is the Concert Band president and co-editor of Silver Quill. She is the Tri-M Music Honor Society historian and National Honor Society’s treasurer.

She has been chosen for the All-State Music Festival for the past two years. She has been the junior choir director at the Center Street Congregational Church in Machias for the past two years.

Theresa Michaud, the first honor essayist, is the daughter of Dan and Connie Michaud of East Machias. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, this year as president. She has been a member of the Student Council for two years and is vice president. She has excelled in sports as well as academics, playing volleyball for four years. In the fall she will attend Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, Pa., majoring in elementary education.

Nicole Stauffer, the second honor essayist, will study psychology at the University of Maine at Machias. She is the daughter of Larry and Toni Stauffer of Cutler. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years and was the peer tutor coordinator this year. She has been active in sports, playing softball, basketball and girls soccer.
