Brunswick tips Greely

BATH -Brunswick captured its first title in six trips to the final when senior Megan Rousseau converted in the penalty-kick shootout to give the Dragons a 1-0 win over the Greely Rangers in the state Class A girls soccer final Saturday.

The Dragons (17-0-1) own the shootout after the two teams failed to produce a goal in 120 minutes, including four 10-minute overtimes.

Each team had converted four penalty kicks but Brunswick goalie Lindsay Hammond had made the only save, diving to her left to stop Mary Skahan’s low attempt.

“I read her eyes and her body language,” said Hammond.

Moments later, Rousseau tucked her perfectly placed PK inside the post to the right of Greely goalie Molly Hamel to end it as Brunswick had the penalty-kick edge, 5-4.

“I always shoot low, left corner,” said Rousseau, who won a regular-season game and a playoff game by converting penalty kicks and said she didn’t feel any additional pressure when she stepped to the penalty spot.

“I didn’t think about it. I had nothing to lose,” said Rousseau.

Megan Clement, Kate Ross, Caroline Hartzell, and Meghan Morrell had converted earlier PKs for Brunswick while Greely (11-3-4) received successful PKs from Sky Bryan, Stephanie Morrison, Marisa Crommett, and Rachelle Doucette.
