STOCKHOLM – Fifteen area firefighters were up all night Sunday fighting a barn fire. They lost the barn but managed to save Michael Sund’s home which is near the barn.
Dave Strainge, a Stockholm firefighter said volunteer firefighters received assistance from Caribou and Loring firefighters in the effort that started shortly before 1 a.m. Firefighters were at the scene until after 8 a.m.
Strainge said the call for the fire of undetermined cause came at 12:50 a.m.
Fire Marshal Tim Lowell said he had heard of the fire, but had not conducted an investigation. He said he had spoken to Stockholm Fire Chief Jeffrey Page, but Lowell had not been at the scene.
The barn was lost, as were some chickens and a pig. About nine head of cattle were not in the barn at the time.
“We managed to save the house, but it was tough,” Strainge said Monday afternoon. “I have no idea how [the fire] started.
“I imagine it will be looked into,” he said. “I don’t know the amount of damage, but the barn is gone.”
He didn’t know how much hay was in storage, but Strainge said there was hay there for the Sund cattle. He said Sund also sells hay.
