Caribou High School

CARIBOU – Caribou High School’s Class of 2001 will graduate at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at the high school.

Matthew S. Burden has been selected as class valedictorian and Cristin Samantha Hagelstein has been named class salutatorian.

Burden is the son of Steve and Kathy Burden of New Sweden. Throughout his high school career, he has been active in extracurricular activities along with being involved in his church and community.

He spent four years as a part of the Math Team, four years in the Chess Club, and two years on the Academic Team. In addition to this, he has been a faithful part of the Youth Alive Program and has been in the National Honor Society for two years.

Burden has received a National Merit Letter of Commendation, and has been recognized several times during the past years for his work in English and literature, mathematics and science at Caribou High School.

He is a recently published novelist, the author of “Tactus: A Quest for Truth.” He plans to attend Houghton College in New York this fall and major in intercultural studies and linguistics.

Salutatorian Hagelstein, daughter of Bruce and Gail Hagelstein of Caribou, is a member of the National Honor Society where she was the regional representative.

She earned letters in cross-country skiing, volleyball and track, where she participated in the state finals. She also competed in cross-country running and water polo.

She has served as president of the Senate at Dirigo Girls State, treasurer of the Student Council, was a D.A.R.E. role model, and has been a member of Students Against Drunk Drivers.

She had roles in several school plays, including the Competitive Drama Team.

During her senior year, she was a participant in Maine’s Junior Miss Program, where she won the Spirit of Junior Miss award and placed fourth runner-up.

Active in the community, she has volunteered in local libraries, church youth groups and Habitat for Humanity, and has worked in the potato harvest.

She plans to attend Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where she was accepted as a Presidential Scholar, with a Merit Scholarship. She will study pre-healing arts.
