Presque Isle woman gets recognition

BANGOR – The American Cancer Society’s annual Volunteer Celebration dinner was held Oct. 26 at Spectacular Events Center in Bangor. Marilyn Hoxie of Presque Isle, was the recipient of the 2004 American Cancer Society Sunrise Award for her work with the Look Good, Feel Better program throughout the state.

Hoxie was selected for her professional attitude and innate compassion by freely providing hope and self-esteem to women coping with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

“Thanks to Marylin’s diligence, Look Good, Feel Better programs are now in Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot and Washington counties” said Doug Dieckmann, Community Executive for the American Cancer Society. “More volunteers are available to do individual sessions in those areas, too. Marilyn has sacrificed her days off and has closed her salon in order to travel hundreds of miles to faithfully hold sessions wherever she is needed.”

Look Good, Feel Better is a free, community-based program offered through a partnership of the American Cancer Society, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation, and the National Cosmetology Association.

Guided by volunteer licensed cosmetologists, female cancer patients who participate in the class learn how to use makeup and skin care techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

The American Cancer Society volunteer awards are given annually to recognize and honor New England volunteers whose actions and service in the fight against cancer most exemplify the Society’s values.
