2 MCI students in crash Police say speed, inexperience factors

PITTSFIELD – Two teen-age girls, students at Maine Central Institute, were injured Friday afternoon in a rollover accident on the Powers Road in rural west Pittsfield.

Daron Caraballo, 18, of Detroit, a passenger in the 1998 Isuzu Trooper, was ejected from the vehicle and received serious lacerations to her face, hand and arm. She was treated at Sebasticook Valley Hospital, then taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for surgery Friday night.

According to police, a portion of Caraballo’s hand was nearly amputated in the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, Danielle Scribner, 17, of Hartland, received bruises and was treated for her injuries and released from Sebasticook Valley Hospital.

According to Sgt. Timothy Roussin of the Pittsfield Police Department, driver inexperience and excessive speed were the causes of the 3 p.m. crash.

Roussin said Scribner was driving fast on the dirt road when she encountered a “rippled” section of roadbed. “She slammed on her brakes and went into a skid. She flew into the ditch, striking the bank and some rocks. That caused the Trooper to flip completely over,” Roussin said.

Scribner was wearing a seat belt, he said, but it wasn’t known whether Caraballo had a belt on. Roussin said no charges would be filed in the accident, which demolished the vehicle.
