Caribou man missing since Dec. 2

CARIBOU – A local woman is hoping that a clue or an eyewitness will help her find her adult son, who has been missing and has not contacted any family members in two weeks.

Toby S. LeGassey, 30, who had been living in Caribou, has not been seen since Dec. 2, when he boarded a bus bound for Pennsylvania to see his children, according to his mother, Leola Murphy of Caribou.

LeGassey said he would call his ex-wife when he reached Bangor, but Murphy said her son never made the call.

The lack of contact was uncommon for her son, Murphy said Thursday. The family became extremely concerned, however, when LeGassey did not show up at the appointed time and place in Pennsylvania to meet his children.

“Nobody’s heard from him, not his brothers, his father, his ex-wife or his children. No one,” Murphy said. “This is too much unlike Toby.”

Murphy reported the situation to police in Pennsylvania, New York and Maine and requested them to conduct a search for LeGassey.

Officials with the Caribou Police Department sent out an “attempt to locate” bulletin on a computer system for law enforcement agencies. If LeGassey is arrested or otherwise found by police, his name would come up in the system and officials would tell the man that his family was trying to locate him, according to Lt. Michael Gahagan of the Caribou department.

That, however, is about all police can do, Gahagan said.

“He’s not mentally incompetent. He’s over 21,” the lieutenant explained.

Police generally do not conduct searches for missing adults, he said.

Though police aren’t conducting a search, Murphy said LeGassey’s family is doing everything else they can think of to find him.

They have hired a private investigator, contacted the local media, distributed his picture, set up a Web page and reported his name to the National Center for Missing Adults.

But the family still has heard no word about or from LeGassey.

“I’m feeling frustrated and worried and very scared for Toby,” Murphy said. “And when I think I’ve cried all the tears I’m going to cry, more come.”

LeGassey is about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds and has a muscular build. He has brown hair, hazel eyes and a scar on his left cheek that looks like a dimple when he smiles. He was last seen carrying a red duffel bag and wearing blue jeans, a faded green sweat shirt, a denim jacket, sneakers and a khaki-colored baseball cap.

“If anyone sees him, please tell him to call us,” Murphy said. “It doesn’t matter where he is or what he’s doing. Just have him call us and let us know he’s safe. To me, as a mom, that’s probably the most important thing. I just need to know that he’s safe.”

Anyone with information about LeGassey may contact the Caribou Police Department at 493-3301 or visit the LeGassey family Web page at www.desaraesangel.com/TobyisMissing.html.
